Municipal Tax Breaks for Seniors

Please note: not every town and city is listed and not every town and city provides discounts. If where you live is not listed, please contact your local council office and ask if they do offer tax breaks.

Carbonear:

If your income is less than $40,000 you can apply for an interest adjustment on your taxes

Clarenville:

Seniors/Pensioners will be exempt from interest on place of residence only for current taxes until November 30, 2016,  upon application to the Town and subject to criteria as set out in the "Exemption From Interest" policy. http://www.clarenville.net/clarenville-town-hall/content/tax-rates-

Conception Bay South:

A property tax reduction of 20% is available to senior citizens in receipt of the Guaranteed Income Supplement who meet the criteria outlined in the Senior Citizen’s Property Tax Reduction Policy. https://www.conceptionbaysouth.ca/getFileByName/074 - Senior Citizens Tax Reduction Policy.pdf

Corner Brook:

Qualifying residents 65 years or older in the current calendar year can receive deferrals and discounts including disabled pensioners on their tax account. click for more details

Gander

Taxpayers are eligible for the following reduction in their annual residential property and water/sewer taxes provided that the Total Income into the household is less than that shown
( click the link below ). Income is deemed to be income from all sources and includes basement apartment rental income, interest income and also includes the income of both spouses.

Grand Falls Windsor:

A discount for seniors of 5% and a further 20% for those qualifying  based on income.

Labrador City and Wabush:

Labrador City and Wabush has an annual Property Tax Rebate Program for Senior Citizens. Please contact your town council office to get more information and an application

Marystown:

Pensioners, widows and widowers are eligible for the following reduction in their annual residential property taxes on their primary residence only

Senior Citizens (65 years of age and older) are eligible for a reduction of $80.00 in their annual

residential property tax on their primary residential property only, subject to proof of ownership and
occupancy, if required, in lieu of cancellation of the Town’s Senior Citizens’ Snow Clearing policy. http://www.townofmarystown.com/siteupload/2016 Tax Structure.pdf

Mount Pearl: 

Any senior citizen in receipt of the Guaranteed Income Supplement may be eligible for a 20% discount upon completing the Application for Seniors Discount

Springdale:

5% Discount on property tax for Senior Citizens if paid in full by March 31, 2017.

Stephenville:

Taxes are based on your gross income before deductions. Proof of income must be produced( income tax statement or other form of proof as approved by Council)

St.John's:

Interest Free Tax Payments for Qualified Seniors: are you a senior who receives the Guaranteed Income Supplement for the allowance for the Survivor? If so, you may qualify for a new interest free, tax payment plan with the City .  If you are already receiving the seniors discount will receive this information.To receive more information please call 576-8251
